A Salute to the Soggy Bottom Boys

On Saturday night MC Nick Cunliffe and his Surflines crew provided the entertainment at the 3rd Anglesey Storm Gathering. Sitting with the Soggy Bottom Boys for the ‘Round the Stacks’ quiz I was a little underqualified in the ‘name that lighthouse’ photo round and largely ignorant of the former members of The Pussycat Dolls (or somesuch), I did feel I contributed something with my knowledge of Jules Verne and Madagascar (the cartoon). Our ace in the pack was of course Jim Krawiecki (the man who wrote the book on North Wales) who prompted us with (mostly) correct answers where needed to ensure victory (backing the ‘celebrity’ visiting team of coaches over the home team also proved decisive). I wish I had a copy of John’s winning minute sketch of organiser Mark Tozer from the portrait round to post here, but you will have to use your imagination.

Storm Gathering sea kayak meet on Anglesey

Saturday’s conditions satisfied the title ‘Storm Gathering’, driving through drifts of sea foam lying in the road on my way to the Anglesey Outdoors centre. I chose to spend my days on the weekend on the rivers instead of the sea, but as I look out across the Strait this morning from Caernarfon it seems like the event has been rewarded with conditions to favour everyone, with calm sunny waters today.
